Questions worth asking before you hire a radon contractor

A good contractor answers these easily. They also help you compare more than one quote on the same terms.

  1. What did the test show?
  2. How will the system work in my house?
  3. How loud is it, and what does it cost to run?
  4. Will you test again afterward?
  5. How will I know it keeps working?
  6. What gets sealed, and what does not?

What did the test show?

Ask for the result in writing, how long the test ran and where it was placed. A system should be based on a real test.

How will the system work in my house?

Ask where the pipe will go, where the fan will sit and where the vent will end. You should be able to picture it before work starts.

How loud is it, and what does it cost to run?

The fan is small. Ask how loud it is and what it uses, and where it will sit relative to bedrooms.

Will you test again afterward?

A follow-up test confirms the system worked. It should be part of the quote, not an extra.

How will I know it keeps working?

A gauge on the pipe shows the system is running. Ask what it should read and what to do if it changes.

What gets sealed, and what does not?

Ask which cracks, gaps and lids are sealed as part of the work, and which are left to you.
